Sweden strengthens support to Turkey’s EU accession process
Sweden’s new strategy for development cooperation with Turkey for the period 2010–2013, which was adopted by the Government earlier this year, was launched today at a seminar arranged by Sida. “This strategy, which is extended and strengthened, is concrete evidence of the continued strong Swedish support for Turkey’s membership of the EU,” said Sweden’s Ambassador to Turkey, Christer Asp, at the seminar.
The new strategy increases Swedish support from about SEK 60 million to approx. SEK 87 million per year. The strategy focuses on ongoing reform efforts to prepare the way for Turkish membership of the EU. Sida’s Director-General Anders Nordström opened today’s seminar.

“Sweden is one of the strongest advocates of Turkey’s membership of the EU. This strategy is an expression of that support. We view ourselves as a small actor, but nonetheless important and complementary. The strategy focuses on the necessary reforms that are underway. The reforms are not in place, but they are underway,” said Mr Nordström.
Municipal cooperation
During the seminar, Mr Asp pointed out a concrete project that Sweden is participating in. It deals with cooperation between Turkish and Swedish municipalities in different parts of both countries.
“To me, this is an important project where cooperation is brought down to regional level, to grassroots level. Municipalities from both countries share knowledge concerning social, traffic and environmental issues, and issues dealing with water mains and waste. We see commercial effects of the cooperation for both countries, and we also see that municipalities in both Sweden and Turkey are finding better solutions to various problems thanks to the cooperation.”
Sida and the section for Turkish-Swedish cooperation at the Consulate-General in Istanbul will have the primary responsibility for implementing the strategy. Sida will manage the major share of the cooperation, while the section for Turkish-Swedish cooperation will primarily work on contributing to Turkey’s general debate on such concepts as democracy, human rights, and culture.
How to apply for funding
The funding support is available to the 15 framework organisations with which Sida has entered into framework agreements. Framework organisations need to contribute at least ten percent of the total funding on projects or programs.
